Brooklyn Draw Jam!

The Brooklyn Draw Jam was a monthly event where anyone could come draw and hang out. BDJ was a little different from your average drink-and-draw. Jammers engaged in spontaneous collaborative drawings like jam-comics, exquisite corpses, and drawing games.

Due to various life-changes precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Brooklyn Draw Jam is no more. (The last in person meeting was in March, 2020. We met online April-July 2020.

(When we meet in person, we're usually at Shoestring Studio, 640 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11238. Some shared art supplies are available, but feel free to bring your own. A $5 donation is suggested to keep the jams going and help Shoestring pay the rent. BYO drinks and snacks.)

Past Special Events:

Sunday, December 10, 2017: The second annual Holiday Bizarre, a co-production of BDJ and Shoestring. The Bizarre is a marketplace of cool and weird small-run or handmade goods, with emphasis on printed/paper goods (prints, comics, zines, textiles, original artwork, etc.).

Saturday and Sunday June 10-11, 2017: Brooklyn Draw Jam at Williamsburg Walks. We painted a giant collaborative mural!

Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, 2017: BDJ was at MoCCA Arts Festival, at Metropolitan West, 639 West 46th Street, NYC. We sold a few zines and made a few friends.

Sunday, December 18, 2016: HOLIDAY BIZARRE, a co-production of BDJ and Shoestring. Both Shoestring Studio and Shoestring Press were transformed into a festive holiday market/comics fest. Established local artists exhibited and sold prints, textiles, drawings, paintings, illustrations, comics, zines and other handmade goods. We enjoyed hot spiced cider, holiday treats, and more! 640 and 663 Classon Ave. 12-7pm. Exhibitors list.

Saturday, October 29, 2016: HALLOWZINE, a BDJ-curated zine and comics festival at Shoestring Studio, 640 Classon Ave. 12-7pm. Many vendors! Zines! Comix! Prints! Live drawing! Tricks! Treats! Candy! Beer and BBQ in the backyard! Exhibitors list.

Saturday and Sunday June 11-12, 2016: Brooklyn Draw Jam at Williamsburg Walks. We had some unique collaborative installations in addition to our usual tables-and-chairs scenario. They close Bedford Ave. and put grass down for people to chill on. Jason got ink all over him, Jess chased fliers around the streets, and Brian disappeared.

Saturday, May 7, 2016: Atlantic Avenue Design Walk: BDJ @ Grumpy Bert’s, 82 Bond Street, Brooklyn, NY, 3-8 pm. We crashed Grumpy Bert’s “art battle, drawing jam & truck painting demo”, and cheered them up with our obnoxious collaborative drawing energies. We made lots of friends.

Monday, April 4, 2016: Draw Jam Book Launch at Shoestring Press, 663 Classon Ave, Brooklyn, NY. In addition to the usual collaborative drawing shenanigans, book launch party for the Best of Brooklyn Draw Jam, Vol. 1 anthology and Horrible Garfield!

Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3, 2016: BDJ was at MoCCA Comics Fest, at Metropolitan West, 639 West 46th Street, NYC. We managed not to destroy everything and even sold a few zines.

Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, 2015: BDJ tabled at Small Press Expo (SPX), in Bethesda, MD.
